Bernard Massey suffered life-threatening injuries after entering the roadway outside a crosswalk in Northwest DC and died five days later, police said
WASHINGTON, DC – A 56-year-old Silver Spring man died five days after a Tesla struck him on Georgia Avenue in Northwest DC, where police say he ran into the roadway outside a crosswalk and passed between two vehicles stopped in traffic before entering the path of the southbound SUV.
Bernard Massey, of Silver Spring, Maryland, was identified Friday by the Metropolitan Police Department as the pedestrian killed in the crash.
The collision occurred Sept. 3 at approximately 4:08 p.m. in the 7700 block of Georgia Avenue NW.
Fourth District officers responding to the crash found Massey suffering from life-threatening injuries.
He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Massey died Tuesday from injuries sustained in the collision, according to MPD.
A preliminary investigation found that Massey had been standing on the east sidewalk before running into Georgia Avenue midblock and outside the crosswalk.
Police said he ran between a yellow school bus and a black sedan that were stopped in northbound traffic in the left lane.
Massey continued across the roadway and entered a southbound lane in front of a black 2025 Tesla Model Y traveling south, according to investigators.
The Tesla struck him.
Police said the Tesla driver called 911, remained at the scene and cooperated with officers investigating the collision.
Investigators observed no signs of impairment from the driver, according to MPD.
No charges were announced in the department’s Friday update.
The Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit continues to investigate the fatal collision.
