A routine drive on a rural road ended in a deadly collision west of Dover.

DOVER, DE – Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal two-car collision that left a 70-year-old man dead Saturday afternoon in Dover.

The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. on Dyke Branch Road, west of Wheel of Fortune Road. Investigators said a Honda Accord heading east failed to stay in its lane, crossing into westbound traffic. A Volvo S40 traveling in the opposite direction swerved left in an attempt to avoid impact, but the Honda re-entered the eastbound lane, leading to a head-on collision.

The driver of the Honda, a 70-year-old Dover man who was not wearing a seatbelt, was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. His name is being withheld pending family notification.

The Volvo’s driver, a 16-year-old boy from Dover, and his passenger, a 45-year-old Dover woman, were both wearing seatbelts and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. They were transported to a hospital for treatment.

Dyke Branch Road was closed for about three and a half hours while the State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit conducted its investigation and cleared the scene.
