Middletown arrest made in deadly 16th Street shooting of DC woman

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A 27-year-old woman was found shot to death inside a Columbia Heights home last week, and on Tuesday a suspect was taken into custody in Connecticut in connection with her killing, authorities said.

Officers responded Monday, February 2, at approximately 3:07 a.m. to a 911 hang-up call in the 3100 block of 16th Street Northwest. Inside a residence, they located an adult female suffering from a gunshot wound.

DC Fire and EMS responded to the scene and determined there were no signs consistent with life. The woman was pronounced dead.

She was later identified as Nyesha Walden-Hatcher, 27, of Northwest, D.C.

On Tuesday, pursuant to a DC Superior Court arrest warrant, members of the Connecticut Violent Crimes Fugitive Task Force arrested 35-year-old Tyjuan Bazemore in Middletown, Connecticut.

Bazemore is expected to undergo the extradition process. Upon his return to Washington, D.C., he will be formally charged with second-degree murder while armed.

Authorities credited the Connecticut Violent Crimes Fugitive Task Force for assisting in locating and apprehending the suspect.

The case remains under investigation. The charges are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
