NEW YORK, N.Y. — Heavy rainfall has prompted a flood advisory for portions of northeast New Jersey and southeast New York, including the counties of Essex, Hudson, Passaic, and Union in New Jersey, as well as Richmond County (Staten Island) in New York.
The advisory is in effect until midnight EDT tonight, with flooding caused by excessive rainfall expected in low-lying and poor drainage areas. According to the National Weather Service, between 1 and 2 inches of rain have already fallen, with an additional 0.5 to 1 inch expected.
“Minor flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the advisory area,” the National Weather Service said in its statement. The affected areas include Newark, Elizabeth, Bayonne, Bloomfield, and several other communities.
Residents in the advisory area should be aware of water over roadways and ponding in urban locations. The heavy rain is expected to continue through the evening, potentially causing additional flooding concerns.
Local authorities urge drivers to exercise caution and avoid waterlogged areas. The flood advisory will remain in effect until conditions improve later tonight.
