PERTH AMBOY, N.J. — The City of Perth Amboy is undergoing a major downtown revitalization project thanks to a $2.6 million investment funded entirely by grants and the New Jersey Urban Enterprise Zone (UEZ). The initiative aims to improve safety, cleanliness, and accessibility in the city’s downtown area without raising municipal taxes.
The project includes the installation of security cameras downtown, which will be monitored by the police department to ensure rapid response times when necessary. To keep the area clean, the city is deploying new litter sweepers and 120 upgraded trash containers, along with a Seasonal Clean Team to maintain cleanliness year-round.
In addition, the city is removing the old fountain at Five Corners to create a space for local events, art displays, and celebrations. The Hometown Heroes Banner Program will also be introduced, honoring veterans and service members with banners displayed throughout downtown.
Starting in November, the new Hometown Trolley will offer free shuttle service throughout the city, including the waterfront and historic landmarks. The trolley will be equipped with Wi-Fi, phone charging ports, and wheelchair accessibility. A free BikeShare program will also be available from May through October, allowing residents and visitors to explore the city on bicycles.
This revitalization project is part of Perth Amboy’s ongoing efforts to make the downtown area safer, cleaner, and more welcoming to both residents and visitors.
