WASHINGTON — A man who was shot during an armed robbery in the heart of Chinatown ended up under arrest himself after attempting to carjack a moped just minutes later, D.C. police said Wednesday.
The chain of events began Saturday around 4:10 p.m. at the intersection of 7th and H Streets, Northwest, where police say two unidentified suspects confronted 20-year-old Charnell Whitfield of Southeast, D.C., and robbed him at gunpoint. One of the suspects fired a gunshot before fleeing the scene with stolen property.
Officers responded to the shooting but initially found no victim. Shortly afterward, they were alerted to an attempted armed carjacking in an alley behind the 400 block of H Street, Northwest. The suspect tried to steal a moped at gunpoint but failed.
Whitfield was found a short time later in the 400 block of Massachusetts Avenue, suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital and arrested. Police charged him with Armed Carjacking (Gun).
Surveillance footage captured the two suspects from the initial robbery and shooting. The Metropolitan Police Department has released the video in an effort to identify them.
Investigators are now seeking assistance from the public to identify the two individuals who robbed and shot Whitfield before the failed carjacking attempt.
