Brooklyn sailor goes overboard with $1M lottery shock

Brooklyn sailor scores $1 million Maryland Lottery prize after misread ticket

BALTIMORE, MD — A merchant marine from Brooklyn struck it rich at a Baltimore convenience store after discovering a scratch-off ticket he initially believed was worth $100,000 was actually a $1 million winner.

The commercial sailor had been docked at the Port of Baltimore when he visited the 7-Eleven at 1465 Key Highway in the Locust Point neighborhood. He bought five $20 Lucky 777 scratch-off tickets and had the clerk scan them after scratching off the QR codes. The clerk informed him one ticket had won $100,000.

Satisfied with the result, he left the store. Later that evening, he revealed the ticket to his crewmates, who encouraged him to scratch the full play area. That’s when he learned the prize was actually $1 million, ten times what he had initially believed.

The longtime lottery player traveled to Maryland Lottery headquarters on Monday to claim his winnings. He said the payout will go toward retirement savings and that he intends to continue working.

The winning ticket was one of six top prizes in the Lucky 777 game. Three of those $1 million prizes remain unclaimed. The 7-Eleven that sold the winning ticket will receive a $1,000 retailer bonus.

The Lucky 777 game launched in mid-May and still has thousands of prizes remaining at lower levels, including multiple $50,000 wins.
