Driver charged with DUI after running red light and admitting to smoking marijuana in Stafford County

STAFFORD, VA — A man who ran a red light late Monday night told a deputy he doesn’t drink due to his religion — but admitted to smoking marijuana before getting behind the wheel, according to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.

At 10:57 p.m. on Monday, Deputy A.M. Oliveira observed a Hyundai drive through a red light near the intersection of Warrenton Road and Village Parkway. After initiating a traffic stop, the driver insisted the light had been green. However, Deputy Oliveira noted clear signs of impairment during the stop.

When questioned, the driver denied consuming alcohol and cited his religious beliefs, but openly admitted to using marijuana prior to operating the vehicle. He was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and failure to obey a traffic signal.

The driver was transported to Rappahannock Regional Jail, where he was held until he was deemed sober.

No injuries or accidents were reported in connection with the incident.
