Veteran prosecutor Brian Shevlin named deputy first assistant in Mercer County

TRENTON, NJ – A seasoned New Jersey prosecutor with more than two decades of experience has been appointed to a top leadership role in the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.

Brian Shevlin was sworn in last week as deputy first assistant prosecutor by Superior Court Judge Amber J. Gibbs.

The appointment was announced by Mercer County Prosecutor Janetta D. Marbrey, who praised Shevlin’s long record of public service and leadership across multiple counties.

Shevlin began his prosecutorial career in Mercer County in 2001, serving in several key divisions including Grand Jury, Civil Forfeiture, Domestic Violence, and Internal Affairs. He later became a trial team leader before moving on to other county offices.

Veteran of multiple county offices

In 2014, Shevlin joined the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office, where he supervised the Special Victims Unit for more than seven years. Over the past decade, he served with the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office in various leadership capacities — from trial team leader to section chief of the Special Victims Unit, and eventually deputy first assistant prosecutor.

Before entering public service, Shevlin worked as an associate at Hoagland, Longo, Moran, Dunst & Doukas in New Brunswick and clerked for Superior Court Judge Helen E. Hoens in Somerset County.

Strong academic foundation

Shevlin holds a bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University, a master’s in criminal justice from Rutgers University, and a law degree from Seton Hall University School of Law.

His appointment marks a return to the office where his prosecutorial career began, bringing with him decades of experience in criminal law and public service.

Marbrey said the office looks forward to Shevlin’s leadership as he steps into his new role guiding the next generation of Mercer County prosecutors.
