Mega Millions ticket bought in Chesapeake nets anonymous winner $2 million payday
CHESAPEAKE, VA – A routine stop at a local Wawa turned into a multimillion-dollar moment for one lucky Mega Millions player, who walked away with a $2 million prize after adding a single extra dollar to his ticket purchase.
The anonymous winner matched the first five numbers in the September 26 Mega Millions drawing, missing only the Mega Ball. While this would normally land a $1 million prize, the player had opted for the Megaplier add-on — doubling the winnings to a staggering $2 million.
The ticket was purchased at the Wawa store located at 471 Kempsville Road in Chesapeake. It was the only ticket in the entire country to match the first five numbers in that night’s drawing: 4-21-27-33-49, with the Mega Ball number 21.
Virginia law allows lottery winners of $1 million or more to remain anonymous, and the winner in this case chose to do just that. Lottery officials confirmed the prize claim and said the winning numbers were selected using Easy Pick, meaning the ticket’s numbers were randomly generated by the computer.
Retailers aren’t left out of the win either. Wawa will receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the $2 million winning ticket.
Had the player matched all six numbers, they would have secured the entire Mega Millions jackpot, which was estimated at $474 million at the time of the drawing. The odds of matching five numbers but not the Mega Ball are 1 in 12,629,232.
As with all Virginia Lottery proceeds, the profits from this and all other ticket sales go toward K-12 education in the state. In Fiscal Year 2025, the Lottery raised more than $901 million for public schools, contributing about 10 percent of the state’s K-12 education budget. Chesapeake, where the winning ticket was sold, received over $31.9 million in funding from the Lottery in the last fiscal year.
