Barren Springs man wins $100K Powerball prize after one ticket and a $1 upgrade
BARREN SPRINGS, VA – A routine visit to the Gobble Stop in Barren Springs turned into a six-figure surprise for James Huff, a retired Wythe County resident who walked away with a $100,000 Powerball win from the September 6 drawing.
Huff purchased one Easy Pick Powerball ticket at the store on Wysor Highway and later saw news that someone had won a major prize. That someone turned out to be him. His ticket matched four of the first five numbers—11, 23, 44, 61, 62—and the Powerball number, 17. Normally worth $50,000, the prize doubled to $100,000 because Huff had added the $1 Power Play option when he bought his ticket.
Huff claimed his winnings through the Virginia Lottery and said he intends to use the money to pay bills and make home repairs.
Powerball drawings take place three times a week—on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at 10:59 p.m. The odds of hitting all six numbers to win the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million. The odds of winning any Powerball prize are 1 in 25.
The Virginia Lottery confirmed Huff’s win and noted that proceeds from all ticket sales benefit public K-12 education in the Commonwealth. Wythe County, where Huff resides, received more than $3.9 million in Lottery funding last fiscal year.
In total, the Virginia Lottery raised over $901 million for public schools during Fiscal Year 2025, accounting for approximately 10 percent of Virginia’s total K-12 education budget.
