Traffic stop in LaVale leads to cocaine trafficking arrest, sheriff says

LaVale, MD – A routine traffic stop by the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office on Winchester Road in LaVale led to the discovery of a large quantity of suspected cocaine and the arrest of a West Virginia woman, authorities announced Friday.

Deputies conducted the stop on January 23, 2026, and, after speaking with the female driver, developed probable cause to search the vehicle. The search revealed narcotics and drug paraphernalia, leading to the driver’s immediate arrest.

The suspect, identified as Laura Kelso of Morgantown, West Virginia, was taken into custody and charged with possession with intent to distribute narcotics, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, and possession of paraphernalia.
