MACON COUNTY, NC – A routine traffic stop along U.S. 441 North escalated into a drug arrest Tuesday after deputies identified a driver they believed was operating a vehicle without a valid license. The encounter led to the discovery of methamphetamine and additional charges, according to the Macon County Sheriff’s Office.
The stop was conducted April 8 by the agency’s Criminal Interdiction Unit, which reported recognizing the driver and suspecting her license was invalid. A records check confirmed those suspicions.
According to the sheriff’s office, “Deputies reported that they initially recognized the driver and believed her driver’s license to be invalid.” Officials added that “A subsequent check through law enforcement databases, as well as confirmation with Macon County 911, verified that the driver’s license remained invalid.”
Drug discovery during roadside investigation
During the stop, the driver disclosed she had marijuana in her possession, prompting a search of both the individual and the vehicle. Authorities said the Franklin Police Department assisted in the search, which resulted in the seizure of methamphetamine.
The sheriff’s office stated, “Upon further investigation, the female driver made known to having marijuana in her possession.” Officials continued, “A subsequent search of the female and vehicle was conducted, and with assistance from the Franklin Police Department, methamphetamine was located and seized.”
Charges filed, suspect held without bond
Kayley Crisp was charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell, and deliver methamphetamine, possession of marijuana up to one-half ounce, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
“At the time of this release, Crisp was being held at the Macon County Detention Center under NO BOND,” the sheriff’s office said.
