Governor Mikie Sherrill threw her support behind Democratic congressional candidate Rebecca Bennett, calling New Jersey’s 7th District race one of the nation’s most important contests in the fight for control of the U.S. House.
New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill has formally endorsed Democratic congressional candidate Rebecca Bennett, adding her support to a race expected to be among the most closely watched House contests in the country.

It could work. New Jersey just elected another out-of-state helicopter pilot, Virginia native Mikie Sherrill, for governor. Ironically, she shares the same name with the New Jersey Governor, Rebecca. Mikie Sherril’s real name is actually Rebecca too.

Bennett, a Texas native and former Navy helicopter pilot and healthcare executive, is challenging Republican Rep. Tom Kean Jr., who is seeking a third term representing New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District.
In a campaign video released Wednesday, Sherrill praised Bennett’s military service and leadership.
“She is somebody who has spent her life fighting for our country as a Navy helicopter pilot, fighting for our families,” Sherrill said. “She’s a mom and works in healthcare. I mean, this is a woman who is the full package.”
Sherrill calls race critical to House control
The governor framed the election as one with national implications, arguing that control of the House of Representatives could hinge on competitive districts such as New Jersey’s 7th.
“This is also one of the key races, not just in New Jersey, but in the nation. This is how we take back the majority,” Sherrill said. “Rebecca, I’m so proud to endorse you.”
Bennett echoed that message, thanking the governor for her endorsement.
“As the governor said, this is one of the most important races in the country this year to take back the House,” Bennett said. “So let’s go win this. Let’s go flip this seat.”
Kean seeks third term after medical absence
Kean, a Republican, is running for a third term in the swing district, which political analysts have identified as one of the nation’s most competitive House races.
Earlier this year, Kean missed more than 100 House floor votes during an extended medical absence. His office said he was dealing with a medical emergency and continued performing congressional duties remotely before returning to in-person work after securing the Republican nomination.
The Cook Political Report has rated New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District as one of the competitive races that could help determine which party controls the House following the 2026 midterm elections.
Questions have also been raised publicly about Bennett’s residency because she has lived and worked outside New Jersey at various points during her military and professional career. The U.S. Constitution requires members of Congress to be residents of the state they represent when elected, but it does not require candidates to reside in the congressional district itself. Bennett’s campaign says she is running as a New Jersey candidate for the state’s 7th District.
