A routine lottery stop turned into a life-changing surprise when a Chesterfield County man uncovered the top prize while still inside the store.

MIDLOTHIAN, VA — A Chesterfield County man won the $500,000 top prize on a Virginia Lottery scratch-off ticket after buying it during what he calls his daily lottery routine.

The anonymous winner purchased the winning Six Figures scratch-off ticket at Styles Bi-Rite, located at 11300 Hull Street Road in Midlothian.

While scratching the ticket inside the store, he realized he had won the game’s top prize of $500,000.

Virginia law allows lottery winners to remain anonymous, and the Virginia Lottery did not release his identity.

The winner said he worked to contain his excitement so he would not draw attention from other customers. When he found a private moment, he called his son to share the news.

He told Virginia Lottery officials he has no immediate plans for the prize money.

The Six Figures scratch-off game offers prizes ranging from $10 to $500,000. According to the Virginia Lottery, one $500,000 top prize remains unclaimed. The odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 897,600, while the overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 3.97.
