A woman was struck and killed after an SUV left the roadway and entered a park before the driver ran from the scene, investigators said.
NORTHEAST DC — A woman was killed after an SUV veered off the roadway and into a park in Northeast DC before the driver fled on foot, prompting an active investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department.
The crash occurred at about 12:45 a.m. Monday near the intersection of Bladensburg Road and South Dakota Avenue, according to police.
Officers responding to a report of a crash involving a pedestrian found an adult woman with serious injuries in the adjacent park. DC Fire and EMS responded and determined she showed no signs consistent with life. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
A preliminary investigation found that an Audi Q7 was traveling southbound on South Dakota Avenue when it left the roadway and entered the park area between Franklin Street and Bladensburg Road. Police said the SUV struck a female pedestrian before the driver fled the scene on foot prior to officers’ arrival.
The victim was identified as Shana Battle, 45, of Laurel, Maryland.
The Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit is investigating the fatal crash.
