Lottery winner says grandkids and family will share in surprise prize
BALTIMORE, Md. — A Baltimore lottery player is celebrating a $50,000 scratch-off win and already knows where part of the money is headed, saying his grandchildren, nieces and nephews will share in the unexpected prize before he uses the rest to travel and visit family.
The Maryland Lottery announced the Baltimore resident claimed the top prize Thursday after winning on a $5 Gold Bar Bingo scratch-off ticket.
The winner, who said he regularly plays scratch-offs, told lottery officials he was stunned when he realized he had landed the game’s $50,000 top prize.
“I play scratch-offs often, and it shocked me when I saw that one,” he said while claiming the prize at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
The winner said he plans to share part of the money with family members.
“I’m going to give some to the grandkids, nieces and nephews. The rest is for me,” he said, adding that he also plans to travel to visit relatives in other parts of the country.
The winning ticket was purchased at Paradise Liquors, located at 2221 Pennsylvania Avenue in Baltimore.
According to the Maryland Lottery, the winning ticket came from the sixth edition of the Gold Bar Bingo scratch-off game, which is being phased out after its release in July 2025.
A seventh edition of Gold Bar Bingo went on sale two weeks ago, and lottery officials said all seven of its $50,000 top prizes remain unclaimed.
