Rare scratch-off purchase turns into $50,000 top prize for Maryland player
BALTIMORE, Md. — A Hanover retiree who rarely buys scratch-off tickets decided to take a chance on a Jurassic Park game instead of his usual lottery numbers, and the decision paid off with a $50,000 top prize.
The Maryland Lottery announced the retired food service worker claimed the $50,000 top prize on the $5 JURASSIC PARK scratch-off on Wednesday at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
The winner said he normally plays Pick 3, Pick 4 and Pick 5 games and has purchased only a handful of scratch-off tickets over the years.
“I figured I’d try something different,” he told lottery officials.
He bought the winning ticket at Snax Convenience, located at 6305-A Washington Boulevard in Elkridge.
After scratching the ticket inside the store, the player said he wasn’t sure what he was seeing and handed it to the clerk for verification. Moments later, the clerk confirmed he had won the game’s $50,000 top prize.
The winner immediately called his wife, who repeatedly said, “Thank you,” after hearing the news.
The couple has not finalized plans for the winnings, but the retiree said they are considering a trip to California.
Snax Convenience will receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
Lottery officials said the prize was the final $50,000 top prize remaining in the JURASSIC PARK scratch-off game. One $5,000 second-tier prize also remains unclaimed.
