PORTLAND, OR – A late-night encounter near a Northeast Portland park turned deadly when a father who stopped to check on a crying woman was shot multiple times, leading to a guilty plea this week from the gunman accused in the case. The killing of 30-year-old Aaron McInnis in July 2024 has left a family grieving and a community confronting the consequences of a brief but violent confrontation.
Arvoni Hayes, 25, pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and unlawful use of a weapon in connection with the shooting. Prosecutors say Hayes fired repeatedly at McInnis after the father approached his car out of concern for a woman inside who appeared distressed.
Witness accounts and court details
According to court documents obtained by The Oregonian, Hayes attempted to “put as many bullets into Aaron as possible” after McInnis approached the vehicle. A nearby resident described the scene in the moments after gunfire erupted, saying, “I heard roughly 10 gunshots,” in an interview with local Fox affiliate KPTV.
Investigators say Hayes and the woman were parked near Normandale Park when McInnis, who had been dropping off a friend, noticed the woman crying and approached to ask if she was safe. Court records state Hayes was “completely naked” inside the vehicle and referred to the woman using a derogatory term. When McInnis asked Hayes to step out of the car, Hayes drove away.
Police say Hayes stopped at a nearby intersection, where McInnis walked toward the vehicle. Hayes then exited the car and opened fire, striking McInnis multiple times before fleeing the scene. McInnis later died at a local hospital.
Aftermath and legal proceedings
The woman in the car told police she feared for her life during the encounter, though further details about her situation were not immediately clear. Authorities searched for Hayes for months before locating and arresting him. He was initially charged with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and possession of a loaded firearm in a public place.
As part of a plea agreement, the murder charge was dropped. Hayes is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 14, and prosecutors have reportedly requested an 18-year prison term.
Family remembers victim
McInnis’ death has left a lasting impact on his family, including his 10-year-old son. A GoFundMe created in his honor described the loss, stating, “[McInnis] was the victim of a violent homicide.” The fundraiser added, “This senseless crime committed against him has left an enormous gap for his family to try to piece together, especially his 10-year-old son, Blake.”
Loved ones described McInnis as a devoted father and member of the community. “Aaron was an unforgettable person,” the page states. “He was a son, brother, father, and cherished friend. He touched my life amongst the lives of so many others. He had a heart of gold that never ceased supporting those in need.”
