One number kept the ticket from an even bigger jackpot

ROANOKE, Va. — A Roanoke woman who matched five numbers in a Powerball drawing claimed a $1 million prize, saying she isn’t making any major plans until the money is officially in her hands.

The winner claimed the prize anonymously, as permitted under Virginia law, after matching the first five numbers in the July 13 Powerball drawing. Her ticket missed only the Powerball, leaving her one number short of the jackpot.

“I don’t make big plans until I’ve got the money in hand!” she told Virginia Lottery officials while claiming her prize.

She did reveal one purchase she plans to make first: getting her car repaired.

The winning Easy Pick ticket was purchased at MK Food Mart, 4101 Plantation Road in Roanoke.

The winning numbers for the July 13 drawing were 5, 25, 36, 40 and 48, with Powerball 3.

The Virginia Lottery said the retailer that sold the winning ticket will receive a $10,000 bonus.

Powerball drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. The odds of matching all six numbers to win the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million, while the odds of winning any prize are 1 in 25.

Virginia Lottery profits support K-12 education throughout the Commonwealth.
