Fraudsters are demanding money by claiming victims face arrest
MIDDLE TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Middle Township police are warning residents about a surge in scam calls from people posing as law enforcement officers and falsely claiming victims have outstanding arrest warrants.
According to the Middle Township Police Department, officers have received an influx of reports involving callers who tell residents they must immediately pay to avoid being taken into custody.
Police said the scammers often demand payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, payment apps or other nontraditional methods.
The department stressed that residents should hang up immediately if they receive one of these calls and should not provide any personal or financial information.
Officials also warned that caller ID cannot be trusted because scammers can easily spoof phone numbers to make it appear the call is coming from a police department.
