Victim flown to trauma center with life-threatening injuries

MANCHESTER TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A 43-year-old pedestrian was airlifted to a trauma center Sunday night after being struck by a car at a Whiting intersection, with investigators saying the impact threw him about 50 feet.

Officers with the Manchester Township Police Department responded at approximately 9:37 p.m. Aug. 9 to the intersection of County Route 530 and Swift Circle for a reported crash involving a pedestrian.

Police said a gray 2013 Toyota Camry was traveling west on County Route 530 when the pedestrian entered the roadway in front of the vehicle, resulting in a collision within the intersection.

Investigators said the pedestrian, identified as 43-year-old Richard J. Fescharek of Whiting, was thrown approximately 50 feet into a grassy area on the northwest corner of the intersection.

Fescharek suffered multiple potentially life-threatening injuries and was flown by Life Flight helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

The driver of the Toyota, 63-year-old Rocco Lanzetti of Wrightstown, was not injured.

County Route 530 was partially closed for several hours while police investigated the crash and crews cleared the roadway.

At this stage of the investigation, police believe improper crossing by the pedestrian was a contributing factor. The investigation remains ongoing.
