Attempted murder charge follows late-night West Lexington Street shooting
BALTIMORE, MD – A late-night burst of gunfire on a West Baltimore street left a 53-year-old man wounded in the leg, and nearly three weeks later the search for a suspect ended miles away in Annapolis with an arrest on an attempted murder charge, Baltimore Police said.
Johnnie Hawkins, 39, of Annapolis, was arrested Aug. 7 in connection with the July 19 shooting in the 2600 block of West Lexington Street, according to the Baltimore Police Department.
Police said Hawkins was wanted in connection with the shooting of the 53-year-old man.
The case began at approximately 10:29 p.m. July 19, when Southwest District officers were dispatched to West Lexington Street following a report of a shooting.
Officers found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg, police said.
His injury was described as non-life-threatening, and he was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
The investigation subsequently led police to identify Hawkins as a suspect, according to the department.
Warrant Apprehension detectives located and arrested Hawkins in Annapolis on Aug. 7.
He was transported back to Baltimore and taken to the Central Booking Intake Facility, where police said he was charged with attempted murder and assault.
Police did not disclose what allegedly led to the shooting or whether Hawkins and the victim knew each other.
No additional injuries were reported in the department’s account of the shooting.
The charges against Hawkins are allegations and have not been proven in court.
