Two people cited after drug-detection dog alerts on vehicle during Tuesday stop
CUMBERLAND, MD – A routine traffic stop in Cumberland led to a drug-detection K9 circling the vehicle and police finding suspected crack cocaine pipes on two occupants, resulting in criminal citations for a Maryland woman and Pennsylvania man, according to police.
The Cumberland Police Department said officers stopped the vehicle Tuesday, Aug. 11, for a traffic violation.
Police did not specify what alleged violation prompted the stop or disclose where in Cumberland it occurred.
During the stop, a Cumberland Police K9 team conducted a free-air sniff around the vehicle.
Police said the drug-detection dog gave a positive indication, providing probable cause for officers to search the vehicle and its occupants.
During the search, officers reported finding a suspected crack cocaine pipe in the possession of Christine Carol Shanholtz, 55, of Cumberland.
Police said another suspected crack cocaine pipe was found in the possession of Andrew Leslie Leese, 38, of Bedford, Pennsylvania.
Shanholtz and Leese were each issued a criminal citation charging them with possession of controlled dangerous substance paraphernalia.
Both were released after receiving the citations, police said.
The department did not report finding suspected drugs during the search or announce additional charges stemming from the traffic stop.
The charges are accusations, and both defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
