The Riverdale electrician’s apprentice checked his Multi-Match ticket three times before realizing he had become a millionaire
RIVERDALE, MD – A 19-year-old electrician’s apprentice who only occasionally plays the Maryland Lottery became a millionaire overnight after discovering that a ticket bought at his usual Riverdale store had hit a $4.2 million Multi-Match jackpot.
The Riverdale man, whose name was not released by the Maryland Lottery, claimed his prize Tuesday at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
The winner graduated from high school about a year ago and has been training as an apprentice electrician while preparing for his career.
He told Lottery officials that he typically buys a few Multi-Match tickets every other week at Town Center Market, located at 4705 Queensbury Road in Riverdale.
Multi-Match appealed to him because of its odds and because the game is sold exclusively in Maryland.
His routine changed after he visited the Maryland Lottery website and learned that a Multi-Match jackpot-winning ticket had been purchased in Riverdale.
More importantly, it had been sold at Town Center Market — the same store where he regularly buys his tickets.
The 19-year-old went home and compared his ticket with the winning results.
He checked it again.
Then he checked a third time before accepting that he was holding the $4.2 million jackpot winner.
After confirming the numbers, the teenager gathered his mother, father and sister and showed them the winning ticket. Lottery officials said his family shared his surprise over the multimillion-dollar win.
The jackpot has now dramatically changed the financial picture for a young man who had been focused on learning a trade and establishing his career.
He told the Lottery that he plans to use some of the money to buy a house for his family while establishing a financial foundation for his own future.
Town Center Market will also benefit from the jackpot. The Riverdale retailer will receive a $4,200 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
