Governor Murphy Sues Mayor, Halts Town's High School Graduation

WAYNE, NJ – Mayor Christopher Vergano said he wanted to give graduating seniors in his town a proper graduation.  Students at Wayne Hills and Wayne Valley High Schools were excited…until Governor Phil Murphy showed up. Murphy filed a lawsuit against Vergano for violating his executive order.  Murphy said no outdoor graduations can happen until July 6…period…full stop.

Vergano claims Governor Phil Murphy’s outdoor gathering executive order permits it, but Murphy disagrees, because he specifically said, no graduations…period…full stop.

This is the second lawsuit filed by Murphy against a town that sought to violate his executive orders. Last week, Murphy filed a lawsuit against Asbury Park to stop indoor dining in the city.

Once again, New Jersey Superior Court sided with Murphy, issuing an injunction against Vergano and Wayne Township.
