MANHATTAN, NY – On Monday, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr. announced new legislation (S7364/A7489) to prohibit the manufacture of 3D-printed guns and gun parts.
Current law does not cover the manufacture of such items, making it a class D felony to produce machine-guns, assault weapons, or large-capacity ammunition feeding devices, but not unfinished frames or receivers, major components, magazines, or firearms silencers. The new legislation is designed to close these loopholes.
The new bill would also make it a class A misdemeanor to share, sell, or distribute files containing blueprints for 3D-printed firearms components. The bill is a response to the growing number of 3D-printed parts and weapons seized by the New York City Police Department and the District Attorney’s Office.
