ORANGE COUNTY, NY – A Warwick man has been convicted of Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) and a Plate Lamp violation, following a two-day jury trial in the Warwick Village Court. Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler made the announcement on Thursday, October 12, 2023, stating that Matthew Knight, age 31, is scheduled for sentencing at a later date.
Knight was initially arrested on June 18, 2022, during the early morning hours. Members of the New York State Police observed him driving over hazard markings and with his plate light out on Clinton Avenue in the Village of Warwick. When approached by the troopers, Knight displayed clear signs of intoxication.
The defendant informed the officers that he was returning home from Bethel and had consumed alcohol. He agreed to undergo a series of roadside sobriety tests, which he subsequently failed. Knight was taken to the New York State Police Barracks where a chemical test revealed a blood alcohol content of 0.12%.
In a statement, District Attorney Hoovler thanked the New York State Police for their investigation and arrest of the defendant. “We all expect and deserve that our roads are free of intoxicated drivers,” Hoovler said. “This defendant chose to place his interests before those of society and I am grateful that the jury in this case held him responsible for his actions.”
