NEPTUNE, NJ — The American Legion Family of Post 346 in Neptune, NJ, is set to honor deceased veterans by placing flags on their graves on Saturday, May 11, beginning at 9 am. This annual event will take place in Glendola and St. Anne Cemeteries on Belmar Blvd in Glendola, Wall Township, and will extend to Hamilton and St. George Greek Cemeteries in Neptune.
Approximately 1,800 flags will be placed across six area cemeteries, commemorating nearly 1,200 veterans in anticipation of Memorial Day. This long-standing tradition has expanded over the years to include a growing number of volunteers, ranging from Post Family members to local students and community volunteers.
Gary Crawford, Neptune, SAL 346 Commander and a veteran of over twenty-five years of flag placements, remarked on the growth of the event, noting the increased community involvement and the addition of new cemetery sites over the years. He also highlighted the historical significance of “decorating the graves,” a practice dating back to when the day was known as Decoration Day, involving families from both Union and Confederate sides.
In addition to the flag placements, American Legion Post 346 at 21 Gully Road will host a remembrance event on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, at 9 am. This will be followed by the annual Neptune Township parade, jointly sponsored with American Legion Posts 266 and 346 and VFW Post 1333. The public is warmly invited to join in honoring those who have served.
