NEW YORK, NY — Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Edward A. Caban highlighted new details regarding recent protests at Columbia University and The City College of New York (CCNY). Following arrests made on April 30, it was revealed that a significant portion of those detained were not students or affiliated with the institutions.
During the disturbances, 282 individuals were arrested under charges including burglary and resisting arrest, among others. At Columbia University, where 112 individuals were arrested, approximately 29% were unaffiliated with the school. The percentage was notably higher at CCNY, where 60% of the 170 arrested had no school affiliation.
Mayor Adams emphasized that the city would stand against lawlessness and criticized the influence of external parties in escalating the protests, which included anti-Israel sentiments. He condemned the violence and destruction that occurred, asserting that such actions distorted the essence of peaceful protest.
Commissioner Caban commended the NYPD’s efforts and pointed out the involvement of professional agitators who intensified the situations on campuses. He reiterated the department’s commitment to safeguarding the right to protest while ensuring public safety and preventing violence and property damage.
Investigations continue as authorities work to determine the affiliations of those arrested, many of whom have not cooperated with the police. The Mayor and Commissioner have pledged ongoing vigilance to prevent further escalation and ensure the safety of all city residents.
