AG Grewal, OC Prosecutor Address Anti-Semitism in Wake of Jersey City Shooting

December 19, 2019

TOMS RIVER-Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer hosted a round table discussion with religious and law enforcement leaders from around Ocean County on Thursday in light of the tragic shootings in Jersey City that targeted the city’s Orthodox Jewish population.

The meeting was not open to the press and neither the prosecutor’s office or attorney general’s office provided details of the discussion during the meeting.

“‪There are those who will try to divide us, but we will respond by coming together. We won’t be torn apart by hate,” Grewal said.

“We will continue to stand up to hate in Ocean County. Thank you to everyone for being with us today,” Billhimer’s office said.

“We’ll support our faith communities not only in times of crisis and but also in times of peace,” Grewal added.

According to Peter Aseltine, spokesman for AG Grewal, the Attorney General is focused on rising anti-Semitism across New Jersey, including in Ocean County and Jackson. He is also focused on groups that use social media to try to stoke fear and division.

“We take the safety of the Jewish community seriously, and will not tolerate threats or acts of violence,” Aseltine said. “We encourage all local, county and state-wide officials to stand up and call out acts of anti-Semitism and anti-Semitic language when they see it, and to acknowledge that hate can lead to violence.”
