Armed duo busted after wild NJ police chase ends in crash

Stolen Mercedes used in Kearny home burglaries leads to Newark police chase and arrests

KEARNY, NJ – A pair of armed suspects are in custody after a stolen Mercedes-Benz used in a string of burglaries in Kearny and Union led law enforcement on a high-speed pursuit through multiple New Jersey counties, ending with a crash and foot chase in Newark on Friday.

The incident began in the early hours of Friday morning when suspects broke into two occupied homes in Kearny. From one of the residences, the suspects stole a 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG. The same stolen vehicle was later used in an attempted burglary in Union.

Using investigative technology to track the Mercedes, Kearny detectives located the vehicle in Newark. As officers began surveillance, the suspects fled, sparking a multi-agency vehicle pursuit. The chase came to a halt near 14th Avenue and Speedway Avenue in Newark when the car crashed. The two male occupants tried to flee on foot, but were quickly captured by responding agencies.

The Newark Police Department, New Jersey State Police, Essex County Sheriff’s Office, Union Police Department, and Homeland Security Investigations assisted in the arrests.

The suspects were identified as Faruq K. Esannason, 20, of Avenel, and Zymeir S. Gilmer, 22, of Newark. A loaded handgun with a high-capacity magazine was recovered, along with stolen property linked to at least one of the burglaries.

Both suspects were taken into custody by Newark Police. The investigation remains ongoing, and multiple agencies are expected to file charges.

Kearny Police confirmed that no injuries were reported during the pursuit or arrests.
