Armed fugitive in Toledo fires at officer before being arrested

Armed fugitive opens fire on Toledo officer during chase before being captured in west side neighborhood

TOLEDO, OH – A high-speed chase through residential streets ended in gunfire late Tuesday night after a wanted suspect opened fire on a Toledo Police officer during a foot pursuit, prompting the officer to return fire before the man was taken into custody.

The incident began around 10:29 p.m. on January 7 when Toledo Police attempted a traffic stop near Parkside Boulevard and Hill Avenue. The driver refused to pull over, initiating a vehicle pursuit that lasted about four minutes before coming to a stop in the 1100 block of Sugar Creek Lane on the city’s west side.

The suspect, later identified as 43-year-old Henry Goodlow, fled the vehicle and ran southbound between nearby homes. During the foot pursuit, police said the officer gave multiple verbal commands for Goodlow to stop. Goodlow allegedly ignored the commands and fired several rounds at the pursuing officer.

The officer returned fire with a single round. No injuries were reported.

The chase continued to the 1200 block of Sugar Creek Lane, where officers were able to take Goodlow into custody without further incident. A firearm was recovered at the scene.

Police confirmed Goodlow had three active warrants — two for strangulation and one for tampering with records. He is now facing new charges, including felonious assault on a police officer, failure to comply with a police order, and having weapons under disability.

The officer involved in the exchange of gunfire has been placed on paid administrative leave in line with department policy. The Toledo Police Investigative Services unit is handling the ongoing investigation. Body-worn camera and dashcam footage will be released in accordance with department guidelines and state law.

No officers or civilians were harmed in the incident.
