AVALON, N.J. – Five Avalon police officers came away with a first-place finish in the First Responders Division after joining neighboring law enforcement agencies for a 5K held in memory of those lost as a result of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Capt. McNair, Sgt. Ardelean, Sgt. Savini, Det. Hill and Ptlm. Murphy represented the Avalon Police Department in the Run to Remember 5K. The department announced Sunday that its team had the top finish in the event’s first responder division.
“Great work to all involved!” the department said while recognizing the five officers.
Run Honors First Responders Lost After 9/11
The race was about more than the finish line. It brought police officers and other first responders together to remember the firefighters, police officers, emergency medical personnel and others who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, as well as responders who later died from illnesses connected to their work following the attacks.
The event came during a week of 25th anniversary commemorations marking the attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon and United Airlines Flight 93.
For the Avalon officers, the race provided a chance to represent their department alongside neighboring agencies while honoring those who served before them.
