Baltimore area waitress wins $50,000 on Maryland lottery scratch off

BALTIMORE — A Baltimore County waitress is celebrating a $50,000 top-prize win on the Maryland Lottery’s Deluxe Crossword scratch-off game, thanks to a spontaneous ticket purchase earlier this week.

The lucky winner said she rarely buys scratch-offs, but when a family member mentioned stopping for Lottery tickets on his way to work, she handed him $5 and asked him to pick one at random. That $5 Deluxe Crossword ticket turned out to be worth $50,000.

“When I scratched the ticket that night, I was amazed. Totally in shock,” she told Lottery officials on Thursday. Overcome with excitement, she rushed to share the news with her family, who initially thought something was wrong when they saw her expression. “We all went a little bit crazy,” she said, recalling how the ticket was passed around amid cheers.

The winning ticket was purchased at the Carroll Fuel gas station on Taylor Avenue in Baltimore. The business will receive a $500 bonus for selling the top-prize winning scratch-off. The Deluxe Crossword game, in its ninth edition, launched in September and still has six $50,000 top prizes remaining.

A random ticket selection brought a life-changing win for a Baltimore County waitress who’s now $50,000 richer.
