Aida Alvarado’s mother and father face child abuse and assault charges while additional homicide charges await autopsy findings
BALTIMORE, MD – A 2-month-old Baltimore baby was pronounced dead at Harbor Hospital after suffering trauma to her body, leading detectives to arrest both of her parents on child abuse and assault charges while the infant’s autopsy could bring additional homicide charges.
Baltimore Police officers responded to Harbor Hospital at approximately 1:08 a.m. Wednesday after receiving a report of an infant death.
Medical staff had pronounced 2-month-old Aida Alvarado dead shortly before officers arrived.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner recovered the infant’s remains. Police said preliminary findings indicated Aida had suffered trauma to her body.
Homicide detectives then responded to the infant’s home and took her mother and father into custody.
Both parents were interviewed by detectives before investigators consulted with the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office and filed criminal charges.
Katerin Monzon-Alvarado, 21, and Oscar Pineda, 21, were each charged with first- and second-degree child abuse, first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment.
Police said additional homicide charges are pending the results of the autopsy.
Both parents remained at Central Booking when Baltimore Police announced the arrests.
Police did not disclose the nature or extent of the trauma found on the infant or provide further details about the circumstances preceding her death.
The charges are allegations, and Monzon-Alvarado and Pineda are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
