Late-night West Lexington Street gunfire ends with attempted murder arrest
BALTIMORE, MD – A 53-year-old man was shot in the leg during a late-night attack on West Lexington Street, then nearly three weeks later detectives tracked a wanted 39-year-old suspect to Annapolis and arrested him on attempted murder and assault charges, according to Baltimore Police.
Johnnie Hawkins, 39, of Annapolis, was arrested Aug. 7 in connection with the July 19 shooting.
The case began at approximately 10:29 p.m. July 19 in the 2600 block of West Lexington Street.
Southwest District officers were dispatched to the area following a report of gunfire.
When officers arrived, they found a 53-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg.
Police described the injury as non-life-threatening.
The victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
The investigation later led police to Hawkins, who was wanted in connection with the shooting.
Baltimore Police Warrant Apprehension detectives located Hawkins in Annapolis on Aug. 7.
He was arrested and transported to Baltimore’s Central Booking Intake Facility.
Police said Hawkins was charged with attempted murder and assault.
The department did not disclose what allegedly led to the shooting.
Police also did not provide information concerning whether Hawkins and the victim knew each other or what evidence allegedly connected Hawkins to the gunfire.
The charges against Hawkins are allegations. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
