SAVANNAH, GA – A Georgia elementary school teacher was killed Friday after an illegal immigrant from Guatemala, attempting to flee ICE officers, crashed his vehicle into hers during a high-speed escape attempt through a Savannah intersection, federal authorities said.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, Oscar Vasquez Lopez, who had been under a final deportation order since 2024, was the target of an enforcement operation conducted by ICE agents on February 16. When officers attempted a traffic stop, Vasquez Lopez initially pulled over but suddenly made a U-turn and sped away, running a red light before slamming into another vehicle.
The victim, a local teacher whose name has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. Vasquez Lopez sustained minor injuries and remains in custody at a hospital under guard. He has been charged by the Chatham County Police Department with vehicular homicide and other related offenses.
“Yesterday, an elementary school teacher in Savannah, Georgia, had her life cut short due to the reckless actions of an illegal alien. Oscar Vasquez Lopez, a criminal illegal alien from Guatemala, has been charged with vehicular homicide. He should have NEVER been here,” Donald J. Trump said in a statement issued by the White House.
Federal officials blast sanctuary policies
DHS officials condemned what they described as “dangerous political rhetoric” and sanctuary policies that, in their view, embolden individuals in the country illegally to resist federal law enforcement. “This vehicular homicide is an absolute tragedy and a deadly consequence of politicians and the media constantly demonizing ICE officers and encouraging those here illegally to resist arrest,” said Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.
The agency said the tragedy underscores the risks faced when individuals attempt to evade federal custody rather than comply with lawful orders of removal. “Fleeing from and resisting federal law enforcement is extraordinarily dangerous and puts our officers and innocent civilians at risk,” McLaughlin added.
