Bones found in Cumberland woods suspected to be human

CUMBERLAND, Md. — Authorities are investigating the discovery of scattered bones in a wooded area on Independence Street, which may be of human origin.

Cumberland police responded to the scene around 1 p.m. on March 4 after a witness metal detecting in the area reported finding what appeared to be suspicious bones.

Detectives from the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit and forensic specialists from the Maryland State Police Crime Lab searched the site and began collecting evidence.

The remains will be transported to the Office of the Maryland Chief Medical Examiner for further analysis to determine their origin.

Police say the investigation is in its early stages, and no further details are available at this time.

Authorities are working to determine whether the bones are human.
