BOWIE, Md. — A Bowie woman’s casual decision to buy a lottery ticket on her mother’s advice has transformed her into Maryland’s latest millionaire. The Prince George’s County resident, who plays the lottery only once or twice a year, won the $1.8 million Multi-Match jackpot in the October 28 drawing.

The winning ticket was a spur-of-the-moment purchase. While at a gas station, the woman’s mother encouraged her to buy a ticket for Multi-Match, a game she wasn’t familiar with. The jackpot for Multi-Match had been rolling over for nearly three months, and the Bowie woman’s ticket ended up matching all the winning numbers.

Initially, it took some convincing for her to realize she had won. After the drawing, her mother, an experienced lottery player, took the ticket home and scanned it. The ticket scanner displayed a “Go to Lottery” message, prompting the curious mother to check the winning numbers online. When she saw that her daughter’s numbers matched, she was in shock.

“I looked at it and said, ‘No way,’” the mother recalled. She shared the news with her daughter, who also struggled to believe it. “I didn’t think it was real. I wasn’t sure it was real until the next day,” the Bowie woman said.

The lucky nurse later saw an article on the Maryland Lottery website confirming that the winning ticket had been sold at Chesapeake Market in Glenn Dale, the very location where she had purchased it.

In addition to her prize, Chesapeake Market, located at 12300 Annapolis Road, will receive an $1,800 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
