BRONX, NY – New York City’s historic two-week stretch without a homicide ended Sunday night when a 38-year-old man was fatally shot in the Bronx.

Police responded just after 9 p.m. to a 911 call reporting gunfire inside 1744 Watson Avenue in the 43rd Precinct.

Officers found the victim, identified as Gregory Stewart of Barnes Avenue, with a gunshot wound to the head inside a stairwell.

Stewart was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, where he was pronounced dead.

Person of interest in custody as investigation continues

Police said a person of interest was taken into custody at the scene, and detectives from the 43rd Precinct and Police Service Area 8 are continuing the investigation. No charges had been announced as of Monday morning.

Historic homicide-free stretch comes to an end

The shooting broke a citywide streak of 12 consecutive days without a murder — the longest such period in nearly a decade. The NYPD confirmed that from November 25 through December 7, the city had recorded no homicides, matching a 2015 record for the longest murder-free stretch in modern history.

Violent crime at record lows across the city

According to NYPD data, New York City recorded its fewest shootings and shooting victims in recorded history during the first 11 months of the year. Murders in November were also at a record low, with 16 citywide — tying the 2018 benchmark.

Shootings drop sharply in Fall Zones initiative

As investigators continue their work in Sunday night’s Bronx homicide, city officials emphasized that while progress has been significant, maintaining those historic lows will require continued vigilance and community partnership.
