BROOKLYN, NY — A landlord has been charged with eight counts of attempted murder after allegedly setting a fire in a Brooklyn apartment building over a rent dispute.
Rafiqul Islam, 66, also faces charges of arson and assault, according to the New York City Fire Department. The fire, which occurred on September 26, forced tenants to make a desperate escape, including tossing children from the roof to neighbors below.
FDNY officials stated that Islam was motivated by frustration over unpaid rent and tenants’ refusal to vacate the property. Fire marshals conducted an extensive video investigation, leading to Islam’s identification and arrest.
During the fire, six children and two adults were rescued, highlighting the severity of the situation. Neighbors expressed shock upon learning of Islam’s arrest, with some recalling his regular presence around properties he owned.
