BROOKLYN, NY – Rudolph Riley, a 32-year-old man from Brownsville, Brooklyn, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the fatal shooting of a romantic rival in 2020. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced that Riley, who pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter on February 23, 2024, was sentenced today in Brooklyn Supreme Court by Justice Vincent Del Giudice.
The shooting incident occurred on May 26, 2020, during an argument inside an apartment at the Gowanus Houses on Hoyt Street. The dispute involved Riley, his ex-girlfriend, and the victim, 34-year-old Cory Turner, who was the current boyfriend of Riley’s ex-girlfriend. As Turner attempted to intervene in the altercation, Riley shot him in the arm and chest with a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun, resulting in Turner’s death at Brooklyn Methodist Hospital.
Following the incident, Riley fled the scene but was apprehended shortly afterward by a detective from the 76th Precinct. The arrest was facilitated by a radio alert that allowed the detective to recognize Riley. Upon confrontation, Riley inadvertently dropped the handgun wrapped in a red bandana, which was subsequently linked to the shooting through ballistic analysis.
District Attorney Gonzalez expressed gratitude to the NYPD for their quick response, which led to the swift apprehension and prosecution of Riley, emphasizing the commitment to curbing such acts of violence in Brooklyn. He also acknowledged the efforts of Homicide Paralegal Amanda Connolly in the case.
