Brooklyn, NY – The Brooklyn District Attorney, Eric Gonzalez, announced today the sentencing of Tarell Herbert, a 30-year-old Brooklyn resident, to 25 years to life in prison for his role in a fatal shooting that occurred in Flatlands. The incident, which took place on September 2, 2016, resulted in the death of 21-year-old Anthony Francis. Herbert, alongside his accomplice, fired at least nine shots from large caliber handguns into a car where Francis was seated with his girlfriend.
According to the District Attorney’s office, the shooting was a result of gang rivalry, with Herbert and his co-defendant, Tristan Murray, targeting Francis, a member of the rival Woo gang. The attack was not only marked by its brutality but also by the victim’s final act of heroism as he managed to push his girlfriend to safety before succumbing to his injuries.
Herbert was convicted on November 8, 2023, of second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon following a jury trial. Murray had previously been sentenced in June to 35 years to life after being found guilty of similar charges.
