California attorney general condemns Trump’s executive order on gender-affirming care

February 1, 2025

OAKLAND, Calif. — California Attorney General Rob Bonta criticized President Donald Trump’s executive order seeking to end access to gender-affirming care for transgender youth, calling the move “cruel and irresponsible.”

Bonta issued a statement Thursday emphasizing that California law protects access to such healthcare and will remain unchanged despite federal actions. He referenced the state’s Transgender, Gender Diverse, and Intersex (TGI) Inclusive Care Act, which safeguards medical providers and patients seeking gender-affirming treatment.

“The President’s attempt to prevent transgender youth from accessing medically necessary healthcare is cruel and irresponsible,” Bonta said. “Denying this care would only serve to further marginalize and endanger already vulnerable youth and put their health and well-being at risk.”

He reaffirmed California’s commitment to protecting healthcare access and preventing discrimination, stating that his office is reviewing the executive order and monitoring its implementation.

The California Department of Justice is expected to challenge the policy, continuing the state’s broader opposition to federal restrictions on transgender healthcare.
