PRINCE FREDERICK, MD – Future law enforcement leaders in Calvert County are earning early accolades after sweeping the regional SkillsUSA competition in both Criminal Justice and Crime Scene Investigation categories.
Held Saturday at the regional SkillsUSA event, the Calvert County teams brought home four medals — including two first-place finishes — in a strong showing that highlighted the dedication of both students and mentors.
Under the guidance of Calvert County Sheriff’s Office advisors Lt. Phelps, Master Deputy Hardesty, Sgt. Kreps, DFC Gadwill, and Deputy Morgal, the competitors trained in real-world scenarios and investigative techniques to prepare for the event. The result: a clean sweep of the podium in key divisions.
Sheriff Ricky Cox praised the students for their commitment, calling their performance “outstanding” and reflecting the strength of youth career programs across the county. “These students represent the future of our criminal justice system,” Cox said in a statement posted to the Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.
Training future leaders in public safety
The SkillsUSA competition provides high school students with hands-on experience in career fields, from law enforcement to emergency services. The Criminal Justice category tests knowledge of laws, ethics, and police procedures, while Crime Scene Investigation teams analyze mock crime scenes for evidence and accuracy.
Calvert County’s continued success in these competitions underscores the partnership between the Sheriff’s Office and local schools, which work together to develop practical training and mentorship programs for interested students.
