Canadian wildfire smoke drifts into Jersey Shore, prompting air quality warning

TOMS RIVER, NJ — Smoke from Canadian wildfires is impacting air quality across Ocean County and the Jersey Shore, the National Weather Service reported.

The Toms River Police Department, citing the local Office of Emergency Management, issued a public notice advising residents that the smell of smoke in the air is likely due to drifting wildfire smoke from Canada. The advisory urged residents to remain calm and avoid calling 911 unless in an emergency.

“Depending on weather conditions, the smoke can travel extensive distances and impact air quality in our area,” the department stated in a Facebook post.

Officials continue to monitor the situation as haze and smoke linger in parts of the region.
