NEW YORK — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested Dan Adrian Agafitei, a 26-year-old Romanian national, upon his release from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn on Monday.

Agafitei had been serving a 12-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud. He was also ordered removed from the United States.

“The arrest of Mr. Agafitei reinforces the agency’s commitment to identify, detain and remove violent criminals and immigration law violators who pose the greatest threat to national security and public safety,” said William P. Joyce, acting field office director for ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in New York City.

Authorities say Agafitei entered the U.S. illegally at an unknown time and place without proper admission by an immigration official.

A grand jury in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York indicted him on Feb. 21 on 17 counts, including conspiracy to commit bank fraud, access device fraud, and aggravated identity theft. The FBI arrested him a week later, and ICE lodged an immigration detainer with the U.S. Marshals Service.

Agafitei’s conviction came on Feb. 27, leading to his sentencing and removal order. His arrest upon release ensures he remains in ICE custody pending deportation.
