Chaos inside Cumberland emergency room ends with assault arrest

ER staff member assaulted during chaos at Maryland hospital

CUMBERLAND, MD — A man accused of causing a disturbance inside a Maryland emergency room was arrested after police said he assaulted a hospital staff member during the chaos.

Cumberland Police officers responded to UPMC Western Maryland around 6:10 p.m. Wednesday for a reported assault inside the hospital.

When officers arrived, hospital staff directed them to 32-year-old Micheal D Andre Patterson, who was allegedly causing a disruption inside the emergency room.

Investigators said Patterson ultimately assaulted a staff member before police intervened.

Officers arrested Patterson and transported him to Central Booking.

He later appeared before a District Court Commissioner and was released on his own recognizance.

Patterson was charged with second-degree assault and disturbing the public peace.
