Chester County cases highlight violent sentencing, student safety drill, and vigil remembrance

WEST CHESTER, PA – A Downingtown man was sentenced to more than eight years in state prison for a violent home assault, as officials across Chester County also marked student safety efforts and honored victims of violent crime during a week of high-profile events led by the District Attorney’s Office.

Ahmad Al-Azzam, 20, received a sentence of 8.5 to 17 years in state prison on Tuesday after pleading guilty to robbery, kidnapping, and related charges stemming from an attack on a 73-year-old man inside his home. The sentencing, handed down by Court of Common Pleas Judge Allison Royer, closes a case that began with a 2024 arrest tied to a calculated and recorded assault.

Violent home invasion leads to lengthy prison term

Prosecutors said Al-Azzam targeted the victim through a dating site, falsely believing without evidence that the man was a child predator. Posing as a delivery driver, he gained entry into the victim’s home, bound the man’s hands, and carried out a prolonged assault that included repeated punches and strikes with a hammer. Authorities said the defendant recorded the attack and posted clips to social media.

District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe said, “The Defendant gleefully tortured a senior citizen and filmed his entire crime to get famous on social media. Thankfully, the West Chester Police Department was able to identify the victim and now he has been held accountable.”

West Chester Borough Police Chief Joshua Lee said, “This case involved the victimization of a resident in his home, the place he should have felt safest. I appreciate the hard work of the West Chester Detectives and the District Attorney’s Office, and I am thankful that the sentence reflects the egregiousness of this crime.”

Officials said the investigation began after the June 2024 incident, ultimately leading to Al-Azzam’s arrest and prosecution.

Student mock crash underscores dangers of impaired driving

Also on Tuesday, West Chester East High School hosted a mock crash simulation aimed at educating students about the risks of drunk and distracted driving ahead of prom season. The staged event featured students acting out a head-on collision scenario involving an impaired driver, with first responders demonstrating real-time emergency procedures.

Police officers at the scene conducted sobriety testing and assessed the simulated crash, while emergency crews and community agencies participated in the coordinated response.

The event concluded with an assembly where guest speaker Karen Bush shared the story of her son, Sebastian Plummer, who died in 2020 in a crash involving an intoxicated driver and lack of seatbelt use. Bush now advocates for seatbelt safety awareness. District Attorney de Barrena-Sarobe also addressed students, urging personal responsibility and safe decision-making.

The event included participation from West Goshen Police Department, Goshen Fire Company, Chester County Highway Safety Project, the Chester County Coroner’s Office, and other agencies.

Annual vigil honors victims and supports survivors

Earlier in the week, community members gathered at Kardon Park in Downingtown for the 33rd annual Candlelight Vigil and Memorial Service hosted by the Crime Victims’ Center of Chester County. The event, held April 9, brought together families, survivors, law enforcement, and local officials to remember victims of violent crime.

The vigil, held annually since 1991, included reflections from survivors and remarks from officials emphasizing ongoing efforts to support victims and pursue justice.

First Assistant District Attorney Erin O’Brien said, “While we cannot fully understand or carry the pain that you all carry every day, it is our great honor to listen to you. It is our profound responsibility to act and advocate for you.”

Downingtown Police Chief Brendan Brazunas said, “On behalf of all the police officers here tonight, I would like to thank the community for the support that they’ve shown the Pennsylvania State police and all law enforcement Officers in Chester County.”

The ceremony also honored fallen officers, including recognition of Cpl. Timothy O’Connor, as attendees lit candles in remembrance.
